The Mazama Story
Founder Ron Sauer created Mazama Capital Management’s first growth stock portfolio in 1993 in pursuit of finding the very best, highest quality growth stocks in the equity universe. The goal was to generate outstanding up market returns, while protecting investors from unnecessary downside risks. Now 17 years later, we are very proud of our top quartile 220% up-market capture ratio.1
Mazama became an employee owned investment manager in 1997, and soon after opened its New York City office. Headquartered in Portland, Oregon, our firm today is known widely for providing a complete growth equity platform for institutional investors. Utilizing the unique research talents and experience of our motivated investment team, Mazama offers five separate growth equity portfolios for institutional investors worldwide. Using our own fundamental industry based research, and the consistent discipline of our proprietary Price Performance Model, we set out every day to ensure that our portfolios remain invested in the most timely growth stocks.
Our founder, Ron Sauer, continues to be as active today as he was in 1993 and remains the ultimate decision maker with respect to portfolio construction. Likewise, he continues to conduct hands-on industry research, working closely with Portfolio Managers Joel Rubenstein and Gretchen Novak, and our other senior sector specialists, to ensure that each portfolio receives the full benefit of the ongoing collaboration and collective talent of the entire team.
To this day, Ron retains a majority ownership stake in the firm and only invests within Mazama’s growth strategies. In fact, all members of the Mazama team are fellow clients and stakeholders in the firm, ensuring that our interests and those of our clients remain very well aligned.
